What are Wood Pellets?

Balcas Energy Wood pellets are a compressed form of wood biomass, made from high quality wood residue produced as a by-product of Balcas’ saw milling sustainable processes in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

It is a low-carbon, eco-friendly alternative to the traditional fossil fuels.

At Balcas we control the manufacturing process and deliveries, so from tree to flame. This guarantees a constant supply of consistently high quality wood pellets fuel all year round. A renewable energy, providing the ultimate, sustainable, high quality and price stable fuel.

Our bulk and bagged wood pellets have the ENPlus A1 certification and the BSL sustainability authorisation, which both guarantee a high quality and sustainable nature of the wood pellets that we provide.

If you’re looking for the Cheapest wood Pellets, the most calorific and sustainably produced in our local communities (Scotland and Northern Ireland), you’ve reached the right site! We are now the UK’s Largest manufacturer & distributor of wood pellets in Ireland and UK.

What Rain Day and Wood Pellets have in common?

rain day balcas energy
Today is known as Rain Day.

And while we have no scientific data to back up the following claim; we reckon we hail from the rainiest part of the world (outside of the rain forest of course).

Balcas HQ is located in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, where we have the rain to thank for its scenery; beautiful greens and plenty of blue. In fact it is said that half the year – the lakes are in Fermanagh and the other half, well… Fermanagh is in the lake.
We’re actually quite fond of the wet stuff.
Rain after all one of the ingredients for growing trees from seed for harvest along with sun, soil and CO2.
You can’t have home grown quality timber that can weather any weather (or rainbows) without a little rain! And definitely no high quality wood pellets to keep you warm and cosy when the rain is on.

So if you’re not already aware of what ‘home’ looks like for a lot of us, have a look at the following short clip and think again before you curse the rain.

Five reasons why Tomorrow Depends on Trees

climate change trees

Here are Five reasons why all our Tomorrows Depend on Trees and how Balcas Energy supports the fight against climate change:

1. Carbon Dioxide is warming the earth and accelerating climate change. Trees absorb CO2 and store it.

2. Balcas Energy is made from fast growing softwood – we plant four trees for every one we harvest, offsetting any CO2 released.

3. By making our business local, we are supporting a sustainable timber industry that is making increased forest cover a reality in the UK and Ireland. Ireland wants to increase its forest cover  by 64% by 2050. The UK wants to increase its forest cover by 19% by 2050.

4. Trees are the ultimate renewable resource – we can grow them right here without having to worry about global market price fluctuations.

5. Moving from fossil fuels to Balcas Energy’s locally produced wood pellets results in a 100% reduction in carbon emissions.

How we make our wood pellets?

We sustainably manufacture our wood pellets in our two plants located in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, and Invergordon, Scotland.

We make them with renewable energy and high quality material. So our operations are powered by green electricity. We generate this on site thanks to the co-products of all Balcas saw-milling activities.

The original timber is either spruce or pine, which are all locally sourced from sustainably managed forests.

World Environment Day

To mark World Environment Day , 4 of Balcas‘ Enniskillen based staff volunteered to litter pick over lunchtime. Two bin bags were filled between them in just 30 minutes along the main stretch of our road.

In a telling twist, they got caught out in an angry hale shower in between the sunshine’s rays.

Litter is an unfortunate and constant blight on our beautiful rural landscape, so they’ve vowed to keep it going every Friday during lockdown!

Thank you, team!

World Environment Day with Balcas Energy

Reducing greenhouse gas emission and increasing the use of non-fossil fuel are the cornerstones of  our efforts to make UK and Ireland more sustainable and support a low carbon economy.

At Balcas Energy we are marking the World Environment Day by also:

  • encouraging a low carbon society with over 300,000 tonnes of CO2 savings per year
  • promoting a low carbon energy system, by currently displacing 100 million litres of oil annually
  • caring about our environment – our trees are part of a sustainable solution to the world’s dependence on fossil fuels. For every tree we use, we plant four more!
  • promoting the efficient use of Renewable Energy – our wood pellets are manufactured using our own energy plant – no energy waste!

Pellet Stoves – Create An Efficiency Factor of More than 90%

The definition for the Wood Pellet Stove from Wikipedia is as follows:

“A wood pellet stove is a stove that burns compressed wood or biomass pellets to create a source of heat for residential and sometimes industrial spaces. By steadily feeding fuel from a storage container (hopper) into a burn pot area, it produces a constant flame that requires little to no physical adjustments. Today’s central heating systems operated with wood pellets as a renewable energy source can reach an efficiency factor of more than 90%.”

A biomass stove can clearly provide heat for the room where it is situated.  However the real benefits come from linking the stove to a back boiler to generate hot water and heating for the rest of the household or organisation.

Biomass stoves that include a back boiler can use 2 main heat sources – wood pellets or logs.  Whilst wood pellet stoves can be considered to be generally more expensive than their log-burning counterparts, they bring several important advantages.  They don’t require as much storage space and can of course hold more fuel via a built in hopper.

wood pellet stoveIt is important to acknowledge that all wood pellets are not the same.  Different pellets will have differing burning behaviours and performance levels.  If you have a wood pellet stove it is important to use pellets of the highest quality to minimise your maintenance costs and ensure the sustainability of your investment.

Balcas Energy Enplus wood pellets are BSL authorised.  We deliver pellets directly to your home or business to be blown straight into your store.  If you have a smaller hopper integrated with your stove it might be better order wood pellet bags from us.  These are delivered in 10kg bags which are easy to load into your hopper.  For more information on Ofgem’s biomass suppliers list, visit the Government’s official wood pellets suppliers list HERE.
