Balcas Energy Wood Pellets are ENplus® A1 & BSL certified

At Balcas Energy, our locally manufactured Wood Pellets are ENplus A1 & BSL certified. We have listed a comprehensive list of our certificates and accreditations on this page, where we let customers see and download any document they need for their peace of mind and high-quality proofing. You can find our ENplus A1 certificate HERE and any other accreditations here.

We control these high-quality standards since we manipulate the trees and timber, through the sustainable local manufacturing process in our two plants in Northern Ireland and Scotland, through the entire delivery with our special fleet, and to your home or business address.  This ensures our customers can enjoy our wood pellets fuel heat in their homes, business, or farm knowing your fuel is of the highest industry standard.

Please see below our authorisation bsl numbers for the two main depots and plants, Enniskillen and Invergordon:

You can check your bsl fuel number on your invoice – on paper as received from our office, or online if you use your online account when placing your orders. This can be done in the Account Dashboard when you log in here.

This is how we make our Wood Pellets locally…

We make our wood pellet fuel with green energy in our two local plants in Enniskillen (Northern Ireland) and Invergordon (Scotland).

We use a sustainable manufacturing process, by using renewable energy and the highest quality material.

The renewable energy used to manufacture the pellet fuel is generated on-site thanks to the co-products of all Balcas saw-milling activities. That’s what makes our manufacturing operations be powered by green electricity possible.

The original timber is either spruce or pine, locally sourced from sustainably managed forests.

Please continue to scroll down to see our manufacturing process in more detail.

Wood is at the heart of what we do. For every tree we use, we plant four more!

Everything starts in our local forests…

We believe that sustainably managed forests are our future. So we innovate with timber, taking care to use it as efficiently as possible, planting four trees for every one we harvest.

We use every bit of the tree and don’t waste anything in our saw-milling & manufacturing activities. Check out the video below to see how every tree we use is processed and how we are increasing the green impact we have on the world around us.

Why is sustainability important?

Environment Friendly & Less CO2 – Renewable energy and shorter distances mean our carbon footprint is less than any other imported pellets, which can travel half way around the globe.

Highest quality possible of your delivered wood pellet fuel – Buying from a sustainable manufacturer who delivers directly to your address is reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

Our manufacturing process in detail:

  • Raw Material

High quality virgin material is supplied as a combination of saw-milling co-products and on site chipping.

  • Initial Processing

This is the initial process to reduce particle size and especially screen out oversized material to improve the efficiency of the drying process.

  • Drying

Material dries at an air temperature of more than 100°C reducing moisture content by up to 50%. Indeed, all the heat and electricity is provided from our on site biomass combined heat and power stations.

  • Hammermill

Particle size is reduced further in a dry material hammer mill, ready for pressing into ENplus® A1 quality wood pellets.

  • Pellet Press

Material is extruded through the pellet forming die at a very high pressure to ensure the highest quality wood pellets. This process draws out the natural lignin in the wood which helps bind the material together. Moreover, occasionally a little natural binder may be added to improve the durability of the pellets.

  • Cooling and Screening

We cool the pellets from approx. 90°C to less than 40°C – This ensures they are fully hardened and are then screened to remove all fines. Then we recycle all fines back into the manufacturing process.

  • Silos and Distribution

Then we store all pellets in on-site silos, ready for filling our dedicated pneumatic pellet delivery trucks.

We make sure we sample and test all pellets during production and on despatch to guarantee ENplus A1 quality standard. Wood Burning Pellets to order here
