Maximise Efficiency with Our Summer Wood Pellet Checklist

To get the most efficient heat from our carbon-neutral, locally produced wood pellets, follow this essential wood pellet heating summer checklist.

Why Prepare in Summer?

Take advantage of the non-peak season to clean your fuel store and prepare your wood pellet appliance for winter. A well-maintained system ensures optimal performance and efficiency when temperatures drop.

Four-Point Wood Pellet Summer Checklist

1. Clean Your Fuel Store

We recommend cleaning your fuel store at least every two years or after every five fills—whichever comes first.

Although we screen all our wood pellets before delivery, small amounts of dust can accumulate over time. A clean store ensures maximum efficiency and reliability.

Follow manufacturer instructions and safety guidelines for cleaning. Check out the wood pellet industry recommendations here.

2. Schedule an Annual Service

Ensure your wood pellet appliance runs efficiently by booking an annual service with a certified technician. This helps maintain safety, performance, and longevity.

3. Adjust Your Thermostat

Set your thermostat correctly for summer to reduce unnecessary heating, save energy, and stay comfortable. Adjusting settings prevents energy waste and prepares your system for colder months.

4. Order Your Wood Pellets in Advance

Check fuel store levels earlier than usual and order wood pellets if needed.

Uncertainty surrounds the upcoming heating season, and demand for wood pellets could remain high. Avoid delays and secure your supply early to prevent shortages.

Sustainably managed forests can play a huge part in reducing climate change

Sustainably managed forests help reduce the quantity of greenhouse gases in the air. Carbon dioxide is the core greenhouse gas accountable for climate change emissions. These are increasing each year.

Sustainably managed trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air for growth. They then renovate it into wood that releases oxygen back into the atmosphere.

In Ireland and the UK, undeveloped forests tend to grow quickly, absorbing lots of carbon dioxide. Harvesting trees before they dissolve naturally will return their carbon to the atmosphere. Thus, allowing the carbon to absorb into the wood. Replanting the trees then begins the cycle of carbon storage. This is why for every tree we harvest, four more will be planted.

Balcas energy is dedicated to increasing the quantity of carbon dioxide stored in our forests. We do this by handling existing forests sustainably. Also, encouraging the use of our wood pellets as an alternative to burning fossil fuels.

Wood pellets are a low carbon source, renewable, and release a lot less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than fossil fuels such as wet wood and household coals.

Key Facts:

Carbon dioxide gas sources climate change. Growing trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Converting the tree into wood products such as wood pellets releases oxygen into the air.

Managed forests help control climate change. Here at Balcas Energy, we ensure four trees are planted for every one we harvest, which helps remove carbon dioxide.

Our wood pellets store carbon. Choosing wood pellets instead of non-renewable energy products and fossil fuels helps reduce the effects of climate change.

Different ways wood pellets can be burned

Earth Day 22

Today is Earth Day, which is an annual event people celebrate all around the world. The event takes place on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

earth day tree in hands balcas energy

At Balcas we celebrate Earth Day because we believe that sustainably managed forests are our future. We innovate with timber, taking care to use it as efficiently as possible, and four trees are planted for every one we harvest.

The original timber we use is either spruce or pine, which are locally sourced from sustainably managed forests. These forests are the lungs of the planet and we are proud of the contribution that we are making towards fighting climate change.

Five reasons why all our Tomorrows Depend on Trees and how Balcas Energy supports the fight against climate change:

1. Carbon Dioxide is warming the earth and accelerating climate change. Trees absorb CO2 and store it.

2. Balcas Energy is made from fast-growing softwood – we ensure more trees are planted for every one we harvest, offsetting any CO2 released.

3. By making our business local, we are supporting a sustainable timber industry that is making increased forest cover a reality in the UK and Ireland. Ireland wants to increase its forest cover by 64% by 2050. The UK wants to increase its forest cover by 19% by 2050.

4. Trees are the ultimate renewable resource – we can grow them right here without having to worry about global market price fluctuations.

5. Moving from fossil fuels to Balcas Energy’s locally produced wood pellets results in a 100% reduction in carbon emissions.

How do we make our Wood Pellets?

We sustainably manufacture our wood pellets in our two plants located in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, and Invergordon, Scotland.

We make them with renewable energy and high-quality material. So our operations are powered by green electricity. We generate this on site thanks to the co-products of all Balcas saw-milling activities.
