New Year’s Ordering!

Winter is coming. Place your online order now!

Reports suggest that ROI is expecting winter normality with temperatures getting colder and mist & fog filling the atmosphere. However, the UK is predicted for an unexpected turn with temperatures set to drop this winter.

November has been a very mild month in the UK but weather forecasts have predicted a completely different atmosphere with temperatures getting cooler as we enter the winter months.

As we approach December, weather predictions have forecasted temperatures to go as low as -4 celsius with the possibility of snow starting from the 24th of November in some UK areas.

With our guaranteed Christmas delivery cut-off date (6th December 2021) just over 2 weeks away, please make sure you place your order before then to ensure you have enough wood pellets this Christmas.

How much CO2 is saved by burning wood pellets?

As you are probably aware COP26 ended at the weekend. It involved representatives from around 200 nations coming together to address how best to address the threat of climate change. Each day involved setting new targets for cutting emissions from the burning of fossil fuels to eco-friendly alternatives such as wood pellets to try and limit global warming to 1.5 deg C.

Burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, LPG, and natural gas is one of the greatest contributors to climate change. At Balcas Energy we have been manufacturing and distributing wood pellets since 2005. In the last 12 months, our customers have saved over 300,000 tonnes of CO2 being emitted compared to the burning of imported heating oil. They are leading the way by heating their homes and businesses sustainably and we just wanted to say “Thank You”.

How do Balcas Energy wood pellets have a good impact on the environment?

  • Carbon neutral fuel
  • Sourced entirely from sustainable forests in UK and Ireland
  • Created using 100% renewable energy (electricity and heat)
  • Locally produced = Shorter transport distances = Lower carbon footprint
If you would like to know how much CO2 you have saved by purchasing Balcas Energy biomass pellets, Please contact us and a member of our customer support team will deal with any queries you may have.

What is COP26?

The United Nations global warming conference in Glasgow (COP26), Started on Monday 1st November 2021 and is considered a crucial moment for efforts to address the threat of climate change. More than 100 heads of state and government and thousands of representitives are meeting to set new targets for cutting emissions from burning coal, oil, and gas that are heating the planet.

Renewable energy is the way forward for heating poultry houses

Members of our team attended a webinar recently based on providing a renewable, energy efficient solution for heating poultry houses. This was organized and recorded by Teagasc Poultry. Within the webinar, Paula, Colm and Gerard, provided lots of great information on why moving to renewable energy in this specific sector will be better for the environment as well as for your business energy usage.

The webinar was filled with lots of information around heating poultry houses and energy efficiency, and we thought it would be a good idea to provide you some key info that will be appealing and invite you to take time and watch the recorded webinar below.

Key facts:

  • Here at Balcas Energy, we have been providing wood pellets since 2004. We understand that in the farming industry time is precious and we consider that. To date, Balcas Energy supplied 1,000 poultry houses in NI and GB, using 45,000 tonnes of fuel per annum, generating 200 million kWh of heat, and producing 160 million birds.
  • The Wood pellets we produce are of consistent quality and cannot be matched by any other forms of forest biomass and when being produced there is no waste which is great for the environment.
  • By using Balcas Energy pellets over other biomass fuels such as wood chips, the heat generated is drier, the direct-fired gas heating, and this creates a healthier environment for birds.
  • The stick–carbon tax increases in ROI. IN 2021 carbon tax has increased to 33.50 per tonne and at least 100 per tone by 2030. This will be an increase of 7.50 per tonne for 10 years. However, the ROI government has created a support scheme for renewable heat which allows businesses to claim up to 38.120 per annum.

Pellet Stoves – Create An Efficiency Factor of More than 90%

The definition for the Wood Pellet Stove from Wikipedia is as follows:

“A wood pellet stove is a stove that burns compressed wood or biomass pellets to create a source of heat for residential and sometimes industrial spaces. By steadily feeding fuel from a storage container (hopper) into a burn pot area, it produces a constant flame that requires little to no physical adjustments. Today’s central heating systems operated with wood pellets as a renewable energy source can reach an efficiency factor of more than 90%.”

A biomass stove can clearly provide heat for the room where it is situated.  However the real benefits come from linking the stove to a back boiler to generate hot water and heating for the rest of the household or organisation.

Biomass stoves that include a back boiler can use 2 main heat sources – wood pellets or logs.  Whilst wood pellet stoves can be considered to be generally more expensive than their log-burning counterparts, they bring several important advantages.  They don’t require as much storage space and can of course hold more fuel via a built in hopper.

wood pellet stoveIt is important to acknowledge that all wood pellets are not the same.  Different pellets will have differing burning behaviours and performance levels.  If you have a wood pellet stove it is important to use pellets of the highest quality to minimise your maintenance costs and ensure the sustainability of your investment.

Balcas Energy Enplus wood pellets are BSL authorised.  We deliver pellets directly to your home or business to be blown straight into your store.  If you have a smaller hopper integrated with your stove it might be better order wood pellet bags from us.  These are delivered in 10kg bags which are easy to load into your hopper.  For more information on Ofgem’s biomass suppliers list, visit the Government’s official wood pellets suppliers list HERE.
